How it works

The checker uses the official list of nationalities published by the European Commission and the list of countries that will require ETIAS. It handles the special cases of Cyprus, Ireland, the UK and the microstates.

Cases it doesn't cover: European residence permit holders, dual nationals, refugees or stateless people, diplomatic passports and school trips. See them in who needs ETIAS.

What each result means

  • "Not today, but yes once it starts": your passport is visa-exempt. Travel now with just your passport; apply for ETIAS when it opens.
  • "You need a Schengen visa": ETIAS doesn't apply to you; apply for a visa at the consulate or visa centre of your main destination.
  • "You don't need ETIAS": you are an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen or from a microstate with free movement.
  • UK, Ireland, microstates: special cases with their own rules, explained in each result.
