If ETIAS is refused, the email will include the reason and how to appeal. You appeal to the country that made the decision. You can apply again, and in urgent cases (a funeral, a court date, medical reasons) request an ETIAS with limited territorial validity.
Official refusal reasons
- Using a travel document reported lost, stolen, misappropriated or invalidated.
- Being considered a security, illegal immigration or epidemic risk.
- Not replying in time when asked for more information, or missing the interview.
- Having an entry ban recorded in European systems.
- Reasonable doubts about the truthfulness of what you declared.
How to appeal
The decision explains the procedure. Appeals are handled under the law of the country that refused your application, not by the European Commission. Keep the email and your application reference.
ETIAS with limited validity
If you need to travel for humanitarian reasons, national interest or important obligations (a funeral or a court summons, for example), you can request an authorization valid only for the country or countries that grant it.
Revocation and annulment
Authorities can revoke your ETIAS if you stop meeting the conditions, or annul it if you didn't meet them when you applied. You'll get an email with the reasons and how to appeal. Always check your ETIAS status before you travel.
Can you apply again after a refusal?
Yes. A previous refusal does not automatically lead to a new refusal. If the cause was fixable (for example, an expired or reported-lost passport, or a missing reply to a request for information), fix it first and apply again; you'll pay the €20 fee again.
Urgent travel after a refusal
If you need to travel for a funeral, a court hearing or medical reasons, you can request an ETIAS with limited territorial validity. It is decided by the country you need to visit and is valid only there.
Frequently asked questions

Who handles my appeal?
The authorities of the country that refused your application, under that country's law.
